‘Are’ or ‘Our’?

Book: Black Swan Green

Author: David Mitchell

Music: Are ‘Friends’ Electric

Composer/Artist: Tubeway Army

I don’t know if I’m the only one – but I suspect not – who ‘knows’ a song for years or, in this case, decades, but haven’t really got a clue what it’s about or what the lyrics are? I thought this was called Our Friends Electric. As in ‘friends of ours that are robotic.’ Because Gary Numan was doing the robot-like thing around that time – especially on this track. He’s probably still doing it but the only thing non-human thing about him these days is his hair, I suspect.

Incidentally, I always think that when someone on Facebook or on an internet forum begins a statement with the words ‘Am I the only one’ they fervently hope to be the only one and want to appear so deeply incisive and that nobody else could possibly have cut to the heart of any and every mundane or profound topic as they have. They’re usually wrong.
